A personable and soft-spoken, and yet sometimes aloof, man who outwardly appears so calm and collected - no matter the situation! - that it almost (definitely) seems like an act. In fact, Murakami is very deliberate about keeping tight control over his emotion, lest the powerful demon he has sealed away within him find sustenance in his feelings of anger, jealousy, fear, and bitterness. Despite that outward appearance of perfect serenity, however, he is in fact terrified of the possibility that he any slip in his composure will allow the beast to flip their relationship from master and sealed familiar to one of outright demonic possession. It doesn't help that the longer they stay joined, the more these intrusive negative thoughts plague his inner narrative. He copes by directing the majority of that negativity inward, constantly searching for the silver linings in every situation.

Perhaps by refusing to healthily express his emotions, he is only cultivating a weakness within himself that the demon may someday use as a foothold to claw its way closer to the surface of Murakami's personality. That is one of his many fears for his future. For that reason, he is increasingly dedicated to his research into Demonology and exorcism - keeping alive the hope that he will someday discover a way to separate this dark being from his soul without killing himself or it...

BACKGROUND

  • Teaches summoning and conjuration at an elite magic school (HS through college)
  • Childhood trauma leads to him (mostly) repress his summoning skills
  • Trained as a healer-adventurer
  • Retired after disaster struck his party
  • Big guilt, does not advertise himself as a healer anymore
  • Made peace with his magic,
  • Reinvented himself as a researcher and a teacher
  • Potentially possessed by a demon
  • He's fine
  • (He's not fine)

As a relatively unassuming teacher of magic at an elite school dedicated to training the next generation of mages and monster fighters, there is relatively little about Murakami-sensei to suggest that he is as remarkable as his more boisterous and eccentric colleagues. Despite his meek appearance, however, rumors swirl that he was once a very accomplished adventurer who retired abruptly from adventuring after the rest of his party was killed in active duty.

While this is true, what most don't know is that Murakami was only able to survive not by defeating the creature, but by sealing the beast away as one of his familiars.

Murakami's unique brand of magic surfaced early, and in a remarkable - some may even say frightening - manner. He is exquisitely sensitive to spiritual plane; even as a toddler, earthbound ghosts would seek him out as a playmate. Unlike others with the Sight, however, he had little to no ability to communicate with these spirits, nor is he capable of guiding them to the light. In fact, his "gift" is much the opposite: he has the rare ability to bind dying souls to his own. If he touches a dying creature, there is a chance that their soul will be prevented from passing on; instead, that soul exists in a liminal reality, bound inseparably to his. (The only way to prevent this is to prepare a vessel with a portion of his spirit, which can be used to perform exorcisms but cumulatively impacts his health.)

In addition to his significant survivor's guilt, keeping the beast at bay day after day is a constant drain on Murakami's magical resources. He suffers from daily pain and fatigue, and his summoning abilities are only a fraction of what they once were - but Murakami's dedication to helping the powerless against the supernatural evils of this world and the realm beyond led him to teaching.

He hopes to inspire his students to accomplish great things in his stead, and his heartfelt instruction comes from a place of both authority, hope for the future, and genuine kindness. He can, however, be a little envious of young people who have their entire future ahead of them, while Murakami feels as if his own was cut short at its prime.

Unfortunately, of those who do know of the events of Murakami's past, there are many who regard the man with wariness and mistrust - they do not have faith that any human can truly maintain control over the caliber of demon that Murakami has sealed away within himself. They watch him closely, ever vigilant for any sign that the beast may be emerging through Murakami's typically patient and collected personality. As such, Murakami must keep a tight lid on his true emotions, careful to never display any show of temper or upset in public.

The result is a man who is outwardly soft-spoken and kind, but highly repressed, with no one he can truly trust to share his struggles - or even a more genuine side of himself.

SETTING

  • Picture a quaint (but comparably modern in technology) version of "Nagasaki, Japan but also there's supernatural creatures and spirits and magic and stuff," where most children of magical inclination are educated in academies that cater to their needs. These places offer specialized classes in many schools of magic, eventual licensure into a guild and employment as an adventurer etc, as well as the opportunity for mentorship from more experienced mages and witches. Murakami teaches at about the high school and college level, while also pursuing his research and conducting occasional fieldwork for the academy.

  • Lore is a kitbash of Japanese Shinto, Wikipedia, and Pagan spirituality. The overarching theme is that there is a Arcane Realm and a Mundane Realm, and for the past 200 or so years, they've melded together in a way that has forced demons, spirits, raging monsters, and plain ol' humans to uncomfortably co-exist. However, also thanks to this melding, humans have adapted and harnessed the ability to use magic and techmagic to defend themselves. Some humans seek a solution to the merging, believing that the Arcane and the Mundane should exist separately, while others enjoy the world as-is and think it is more important to seek a harmonious world.

  • The world in general is more overgrown and rustic in appearance compared to modern Japan, as humanity is less populous and human settlements tend to be more eco-friendly due to magical replacements for traditional industrialization. The influence of Arcane culture on humanity has also led humans to exist more "in tune" with the natural world.

  • Summoners, especially with natural high affinity like Murakami's, are regarded as very creepy and "unnatural" by some, as it's highly suspected this is an indication of distant demon ancestry. This has never been definitively proven, however. (It also doesn't help that many Summoners are very into death, sometimes super into killing things, and more often than not involving themselves with the undead.)

  • There are only two known ways to bind a summon: (1), personally eliminate its mortal coil and bind the escaping soul to yours; or (2), learn that person/critter/demon's truename. Truenames are unique to the individual, so every person or critter or supernatural being will have their own. Truenames can be shared or learned intuitively by the Summoner; the latter case is easy with animal spirits, but increasingly difficult and less common with sentient creatures (especially if they know and can guard their own truename). Often, intuiting of a truename from a sentient being requires some connection or strong emotion shared between the Summoner and the individual (e.g. trust, love, gratitude, etc).

  • Knowing the truename of a creature does not guarantee its summoning, as one must also have: magical affinity, the ability to write the summoning circle without mistakes and in a way that boosts your unique flow of energies, and a spiritual Resonance with the creature being summoned (the mechanics of which are poorly understood). Resonance can strengthen between bonded over time. Demons of strength can easily resist a summoning they don't care for, unless Resonance is very strong.

  • Binding a critter or person keeps their spirit from passing on until the Summoner passes, which is why contracts are typically done with wandering animal spirits or long-lived supernatural creatures rather than people or people-shaped ghosts.

  • Murakami specializes in Demonology, humane sealing and exorcism techniques, and the summoning of animal spirit familiars. He and his guild are highly against killing demons, and therefore the focus of his research is on Resonance, documenting areas of the world where wandering animal spirits tend to gather (and how to find and bind them), and gathering the truenames of demons and spirits who are willing to cooperate with humanity to build a better, and more peaceful, world.

ABILITIES

  • Murakami is a teacher of summoning magics and conjuration. However, he believes that his ability doesn't quite extend as far as his knowledge, as his magic is limited by the effort he expends daily to keep that eldritch horror of his sealed away. He also has (somewhat rusty) knowledge of healing magics, but is more reluctant to disclose that.

  • His research work includes Demonology, humane sealing and exorcism techniques, and the summoning of animal spirit familiars. He is particularly fond of birds.

  • He has developed a technique for quick and efficient Summoning, which involves drawing up his runes and summoning circles into the pages of his field journal in a magically imbued ink. He can then use these pre-prepared items in the field to perform his summons, without drawing on too much of his limited power.

  • He has a hermetic sealing circle tattooed between his shoulder blades, a passive spell which allows him to keep in control even while he's sleeping or unconscious.

  • Murakami's spiritual Resonance with his entrapped demon is so strong that their two souls are on their way to merging. He is vaguely aware of this, but firmly in denial and still hopeful that he and his demon can be separated. With awareness and training, could (and would) Murakami learn to tap into this enormous power while maintaining the essence of his own personality...? Or, will he be forced by circumstances to give in to the creature's power before he is fully prepared to deal with the consequences?
